Sausage Party is a 2016 American 3D computer adult animated survival-comedy film directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon, and written by Evan Goldberg, Kyle Hunter, Seth Rogen and Ariel Shaffir. It stars Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek. The film's rough cut premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 14, 2016 and will be released in the United States on August 12, 2016.[3] It is a spoof of Pixar and Disney animated films.[4]

Synopsis

In the fictional supermarket called "Shopwell's", a sausage named Frank lives with various groceries. In a peaceful life, their ultimate goal is to get picked by a customer. To their delight, they are purchased by a woman, and brought to her home. They soon discover the truth about their existence, when the woman prepares a meal with them that equates to torture and death. With the help of his friends, and his hot dog bun love interest Brenda, they embark on a dangerous adventure to escape their fate.

Production

Rogen stated that he worked for eight years to get the film made, however the content worried most film studios and they thusly did not pick it up.[11] Noting that the film came from "an innocent place" Rogen stated "People like to project their emotions on to the things around them – their toys, their cars, their pets,... So we thought: 'What would it be like if our food had feelings?' We very quickly realized that it would be fucked up."[12] Goldberg revealed the project to Indiewire in July 2010 claiming it was a "top secret super project"[5] Initially indiewire was skeptical that the project was real and not a hoax on Goldsberg's part although after vetting it they did, confirm that it was in the works. [5] Later in November 2010, Hill told MTV News that the film he is working on is an R-rated 3D-animated film.[13]

On September 24, 2013, it was announced that Sony Pictures Entertainment and Annapurna Pictures will partner and co-finance the film, along with Point Grey Pictures.[14] Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon served as directors, and Megan Ellison, Rogen, Goldberg and Vernon served as producers.[15] Sony Pictures Imageworks handles part of the feature animation internationally, and Nitrogen Studios Canada for the rest of the CG animation, pre-production and post-production in Vancouver and Sony will release the film worldwide in 2016.[16]

Casting was announced in January 2014, with Rogen, Hill, James Franco and Kristen Wiig as the leads in the film, while the other cast includes Edward Norton, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz and Nick Kroll.[7] On April 9, 2014, Salma Hayek joined to lend her voice to the film as Teresa the Taco.[9] On May 29, it was announced that the film would be released on June 3, 2016,[17] but in early 2016, the release date was revised to August 12, 2016. It was also announced that Paul Rudd, Danny McBride and Anders Holm would lend their voices to the film.[8]

Release

A rough-cut of the film was shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 14, 2016.[18]
