I am pretty sure that the aliens didn't trigger the Doctor's head to explode; I think it exploded because he was using all of his considerable smarts to resist them, and the fight escalated to exploding head. In light of the chess player in the second episode, who also resisted them (both of them noting that they could feel 'them' inside their heads), and also exploded, I don't think it's something that can be triggered, but instead happens when people with strong wills and intellect (and to whom those are defining characteristics) are invaded by the space ants. Exploding heads
