Tully's Coffee is a specialty coffee retailer and wholesaler based in Seattle, Washington. It was founded by Tom Tully O'Keefe in 1992. It operates nearly 100 stores in the Greater Puget Sound area of Washington, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland, Oregon and Sun Valley, Idaho, more recently Arizona, and licenses its brand for use in South Korea and Japan. It has also opened several stores in Stockholm, Sweden, making Sweden the launching place of Tully's in Europe.

Its stores serve specialty coffees and other treats such as baked goods, pastries, espresso, and coffee-related supplies. Tully's currently has the highest sales of whole bean coffee in grocery and supermarket stores.

Tully's sold the most profitable unit of the company—its Japan partnership—for US$17.9 million in September, 2005.

Tully's is currently in the process of rebranding and redesigning the company.

As part of their Summer 2006 lineup, it has renamed the iced-coffee blended drink from the Spin to the Bellaccino.

Inside Tully's

Tully's opened its first store in Seattle, Washington, in 1992. The founder of Tully's Coffee, Tom Tully O'Keefe, planned to rival the quickly expanding Starbuck's coffee. With this goal in mind, Tully's was off to a fairly good start. Tully's quickly developed into a strong regional specialty-coffee retailer. In 2006, Tully's made its first net profit. But more recently, the president and COO has described Tully's focus no longer on competing against the mega giant Starbucks, but rather focusing on what Tully's achieves best -- fine hand crafted coffee.

Customer Service

Inside a standard Tully's there are generally 2-3 men and women on a shift. Included is either a Lead Barista, Assistant or Store Manager among standard baristas. From the beginning of employee training, Tully's employees are trained to always put guests first. In the intense, three-day training course, examples such as Disney are used as models to stress friendliness and customer satisfaction. A Tully's customer is asked for his or her name to write on the cup. This is meant to emphasize individuality among customers and a personal relationship between the company, baristas, and the customer.

Drinks

Much like its competitors, Tully's uses a standard small, medium, large and extra large cup size. But uses the names short, tall, grande and veinte. (Tully's does not use "Viente", as the word "Viente" was copyrighted by Starbucks.) Tully's does not use automatic machines. Instead of focusing on time and speed, Tully's focuses on the quality of every cup. Because of this, a single drink may vary by a fraction depending on the barista who prepared it. There are no automatic temperatures, no automatic steamers, or automatic shots. All espresso shots are hand-pulled. Because of this, drinks may be customized down to the time of the shot, temperature of milk, or even amount of espresso in each shot. Drinks such as a "Cuban Shot", "Shot in the Dark" or "Long Pull" cannot be made at many other coffee shops because they do not hand-pull their shots. Because things such as humidity can change the time a shot is pulled, the barista times every shot that is pulled. If a shot is too short(under-pulled), or too long(burnt), the barista must reset the shot time by adjusting the espresso grind.

Drinks include: Single and Dopio Macchiato, Cafe Au Lait, Steamed Milk, Latte, Americano, Cappaccino, Mocha, White Mocha, Dilittante Mocha, Coco, Chai Tea Latte, Caramel Macchiato, Brewed House Coffee, Italian Sodas, Fruit Smoothie, Shake, Bellaccino, Brewed hot and iced Tea, and offers a wide range of flavors and syrups to add to any drink.

Tully's also carries several drinks that its competitor, Starbucks, does not. These drinks include real fruit Jet Tea smoothies, soft serve vanilla and espresso ice cream, and ice cream shakes including: espresso, mocha, blueberry, vanilla, oreo, or any custom-made shake.

Store Info

As of August 2006, most Tully's locations now offer free wireless communication.
