Gudrun Corvinus was found stabbed and beheaded in her apartment on January 7, 2006 in Pune, India. Iqlaque Fakir Mohammed Shaikh, a real-estate agent was found guilty for the murder of Dr. Corvinus and sentenced to life in prison. Her head was found near a riverbed and Shaikh was arrested 7 hours later. The public prosecutor at the time, Neelima Vartak said that she was killed for her property.
Returning from Nepal to settle down in Pune, India, where she had many old friends and owned estate, in January 2006 Dr Corvinus was found stabbed and beheaded in her apartment.

Friends, colleagues and relatives in Pune as well as Germany and Nepal and other countries, were shocked about this horrific murder. She had just completed her last work about Nepal, and had plans to continue researching with the local Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune.

Gudrun Corvinus ( 1932 Stettin, Poland - 2006 Pune, Maharashtra ) was a Polish geologist, paleontologist and archaeologist. She attended the University of Bonn and performed her research out of the University of Tübingen, which are both located in Germany.

Specifically, her work and research consisted of studying Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleolithic Archaeology in areas of Africa, India, Tibet and Nepal. Her interests for music, culture, people and travelling combined with her passion for science, lead her to work in the field in many different countries. Corvinus was in fact competent in all three disciplines of Geology, Paleontology and Archaeology and often worked alone in the field.

Death

Gudrun Corvinus was found stabbed and beheaded in her apartment on January 7, 2006 in Pune, India. Notable Research

  • Dr.Corvinus conducted her research in the fields of Vertebrate Paleontology, Paleolithic Archaeology and, Geology. During the 1970s Dr.Corvinus was a member of the International Afar Research Expedition team that discovered the Australopithecus afarensis species hominid fossil of "Lucy" in Hadar, Ethiopia.
  • In 1975/1976 she personally discovered paleolithic sites in the same area, which are known to be some of the oldest in the world
  • She also worked in Namibia performing geo-archaeological investigations for De Beers Diamond Company, where she investigated diamond yielding sediment
