DAD-IS is the acronym of the worldwide Domestic Animal Diversity Information System of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, within the FAO's management of animal genetic resources programme.[1] It includes a searchable database of information about breeds, the Global Databank for Animal Genetic Resources; it also holds tools for management, and contacts for the National and Regional Coordinators for the programme.[1] Data from the Global Databank is used for reporting on the global status and trends of animal genetic resources.

The total number of mammalian national breed populations recorded in DAD-IS in February 2016 was 11 116, and the total number of avian national breed populations was 3 799. [2] These national breed populations come from a global total of 8 822 breeds, which includes breeds (643) that have gone extinct.[2] 7 761 of these breeds are local breeds (only found in one region) and 1 061 are transboundary breeds, meaning they are found in more than one region.
Risk Status
17%, or a total of 1 500 out of all breeds (including those that are extinct) are classified as being at risk and 58% are classified as being of unknown risk status. These risk statuses have remained the same since 2014.[2]
