Question

Quick question: When you say that the etymology is disputed, you don't mention which speakers of what language originally called that god "Nabu". If Semitic or Sumerian in origin, then the Southern Slavic (Indo-European) etymology makes no sense. Is there evidence that the Ben-Avari Southern Slavs borrowed words from the ancient near-East?

The oldest languages, Egyptian "nb"

Egyptian hieroglyph: Basket (hieroglyph),

V30(profile ofbasket) (EveryThing)

(The Nb hieroglyph is from at least 3000 BC-(the beginning handfull of glyphs))
-----
It is surprising some connections are not made to Ancient Egypt
The word "nb"- n(e)b has the 2 major uses of "Everything",... (as in the Tablets of Destiny containing, everything in a person's LIFE)... and the word "Lord", not the word 'bĕlu', as Lord, or Master, but for Gods and the Pharaoh, Lord as "King", as in God XXXX, Lord of the Sky, (Mut, or Shamash)(Anu-?)... Pharaoh YYYYY, Lord of the Two Lands....... but the point is that Nabu as the God of Writing, or Written Languages, etc. ... How could a god of "communication" and "expression",...... not be one of the most important gods...? I personally see the parallels with the Egyptian hieroglyphs or Egyptian philosophies, but when you (one self) finds out about the 7 Debates from the late 3rd millennium BC in Cuneiform, (see Debate between Bird and Fish)... then one understands, that the short story, the expression of "ideas" through language (a TALK page on Wikipedia-!) is where it is at. (When I found out these debates existed, (they are greater than the Sumerian Farmer's Almanac, great as it is...)... and found that the debates are: Debate between Summer and Winter, between Cattle and Grain, Debate between Silver and (Mighty) Copper, between the Tree and the Reed.... I was blown away by the topics.. To Me, they are equivalent to the cylinder seals and the ones that are NON-RELIGIOUS oriented.
Most of the WikiPedia articles are Religion focussed, or God XXXX, God YYYY focussed. The real story is beyond that. If the Nabu STATUE was taken from one city to the next for the New Year celebration, then that is no differenct than some of the Ancient Egyptian (cult)-practices..(=societal "rites" or "rituals", 'CEREMONIES')..
"Nb", is used as a hieroglyph for the (concept) & "word" everything (on the Rosetta Stone for example, 196 BC), but also the Pharaohs were the King of the Two Lands, and the gods were also King/ Queen of the Two Lands... (they, gods, pharaohs, were King/Queen of so... many things)-(these are on temple reliefs, on Papyrus, in texts, etc.) Mmcannis (talk) 18:32, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, linguistic etymologies proceed by somewhat strict technical rules, so that vague analogies and vague similarities are usually not enough (if they are enough for a viable hypothesis, then that's a sign that very little is known about the languages involved -- whereas we know quite a bit about ancient Egyptian and early Semitic). It's hard to even know how to evaluate your proposal until there's a whole lot more linguistic detail (and preferably somewhat less panegyric rhapsodizing about the all-encompassing greatness of Egyptian civilization). (Babylonia & "riverworld" Ancient Egypt):
I did E. hieroglyphs, intensely for 2 years, then cuneiform (especially the Amarna letters), then back to hieroglyphs, and more cuneiform.. (see: WikiCommons, categories: "Category:Cuneiform on media", ([1]), "Category:Egyptian hieroglyphs on media"-(and Luwian hieroglyphs), ([2]))
Only one dramatic word came up in both CIVIlIZATIONS, though I would have thought there would be more: Bennu is an interesting, important 'concept' in Egypt.. it is the Phoenix (mythology).. In Akkadian language, "Semitic" it is at least two words (from Epic of Gilgamesh, ('Glossary', "GLOSSARY AND INDICES", (NEO-ASSYRIAN TEXT CORPUS PROJECT))
banû A--"to create, build, generate"--(Twelve 'word uses', many Tablets)
banû B--"to be good, beautiful"-(Tablets, 1,2,VI, and VII), sooo.... (I thought I would see other dual use concepts, between the two "riverworlds")
(and please note that this is the same two letters reversed, nb, bn)Mmcannis (talk) 14:19, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
