His past party memberships are not important enough for the first paragraph. I'd move it down, but there's no citation with the fact.

Brian David Connell is a New Zealand politician. He is a member of the National Party.

Connell was born in the Manawatu region, and studied history and geography at Massey University. He also gained a diploma in teaching. After working as a teacher for a time, he moved to Australia, where he became a manager at a banking company in Victoria. After holding a number of management and consultancy positions, he returned to New Zealand and took up farming.

Connell was elected to Parliament in the 2002 elections, replacing the retiring former Prime Minister Jenny Shipley in the Rakaia seat. Connell currently serves on the Law & Order and Commerce select committees.

Following his re-election in the 2005 election, he was given only the 27th ranking in the National party caucus, with the portfolios of forestry, commerce, consumer affairs and statistics. Although this was a higher position than his previous unranked state, he objected to being rated so lowly, saying "I would have liked bigger portfolios and a higher ranking based on my ability, rather than the leader slapping me around because I’m outspoken" [1] and that it was a "big rat to swallow". Party leader Don Brash responded by removing his portfolios and unranking him, saying Connell no longer had his confidence. On 4 November 2005 Connell threatened to become an independent MP.[2]

On 13 September 2006 it was reported on TV3 News that Connell confronted Brash with allegations of an extra-martial affair during a National Party Caucus meeting.
