Andrei Gennadyevich Karlov (Russian: Андре́й Генна́дьевич Ка́рлов; 4 February 1954 – 19 December 2016) was a Russian diplomat. He served as Russia's ambassador to Turkey.[1] On 19 December 2016, he was assassinated at an art gallery exhibition in Ankara, Turkey, by Mert Altintas, a member of the Turkish police-force and allegedly a member of the Osmanli Ocaklar.[2][3][4]

In 1976, Karlov graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. That same year he joined the diplomatic service. In 1992, he graduated from the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Foreign Ministry. He was fluent in Korean, having served as Russia's ambassador to South Korea from 1992 to 1997 and to North Korea from 2001 to 2006.[5][6]

From 2007 to 2009, Karlov served as Deputy Director of the Consular Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. He was promoted to director of the department in January 2009. He was appointed ambassador to Turkey in July 2013.[7]

Karlov was married, and he had a son.
