Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome Expansion (popularly abbreviated to RoR) is the expansion pack to the 1997 award-winning real-time strategy game Age of Empires. As the name indicates, it is based on the rise of the Roman Empire. It features a new architectural design, unit queuing, five new units (Armored elephants, Camel riders, Fire galleys, Scythe chariots and slingers), four new researchable techonologies (Logistics, Martyrdom, Medicine and Tower Shield) and four new civilizations (Carthage, Macedonia, Palmyra and Roman).

Some fans felt that the expansion did not include enough new material. Only one new architecture style was added (Roman) and there are few noteworthy changes to the gameplay. Other changes that were made including adding larger maps, tweaking the interface, such as adding unit queueing, using the Home key to cycle through recent events, assigning a button (period (.)) for cycling through idle villagers, balancing damage done by catapults, and increasing the population limit.

New units

  • Armored Elephant: an upgrade to the existing War Elephant with increased attack and armor, the ability to trample nearby units and with a bonus against towers and walls, making it a good siege weapon. Can be built and found at the stable.
  • Camel Rider: a completely new unit and essentially a defensive unit against cavalry and chariot attacks. Can be built and found at the stable.
  • Fire Galley: a defensive unit against other ships with a short range boat and armed with Greek fire. It is powerful against most boats, but takes extended damage from Juggernaughts and Catapult triremes and ground siege weapons. Can be found and built at your dock, so long as your empire is not allowed to get a Catapult Trireme.
  • Scythe Chariot: an upgrade to the chariot with an increased attack over priests and highly resistant to conversion. It can also damage nearby units, which makes the unit not recomendable while defending allied AI territory or in joint attacks, since after a certain damage is done, the AI will turn against the player. Can be built and found at the stable.
  • Slinger: the only new low-tech unit, the Slinger is a unit capable of disrupting archer lines and ballistas, as well as attacking enemy fortifications. Can be found and built at the Barracks.

New technologies

  • Logistics: reduces the barrack unit count against population by half, allowing the player to create a high number of foot units without reaching the population limit.
  • Martyrdom: allows priests to sacrifice themselves to instantly convert enemy units.
  • Medicine: increases priest healing rate on other units.
  • Tower Shield: decreases damage against Ballista, Helepolis and other missile weapons.
