Nextbit Robin is an Android smartphone manufactured by Nextbit (Bought by Razer Inc.). The phone is marketed as "Cloud-first" where it utilizes cloud storage to store data which are not used for a long period of time.[2]

The product and the crowdfunding campaign were launched on Kickstarter on September 1, 2015.[3] Twelve hours after it was launched, the phone reached its funding goal of US$500,000 instead of reaching it within a month and completed its US$1 million goal within two weeks.[4][5]

It was planned to launch on 16 February 2016 when 1000 units of the GSMs variant will be shipped to its backers on Kickstarter, and additional units of 2300 phones will be sold through its official website.[6]

Nextbit was bought by American videogame hardware manufacturer Razer Inc. in January 2017. Sales of the phone were halted almost immediately after the announcement. [7][8]

Specifications

Hardware

The phone is made up of polycarbonate with matte finish.[9] The device weighs 150 g (5.3 oz) and It is 149 mm (5.9 in) tall, 72 mm (2.8 in) wide, and 7 mm (0.28 in) thick. The display of the device is 5.2 in (130 mm) IPS LCD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and pixel density of 424 ppi.[1] The device features an hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 system-on-chip with the memory 3 GB RAM.[10]

Memory

The phone comes with 32 GB of internal storage but does not feature any external storage. However, the phone utilizes the cloud storage of 100 GB offered by the manufacturer which is integrated within the phone's software as an additional storage.[9]

When the applications are not used by the user for a long period of time, it is then backed up and archived into the cloud storage to reduce the internal storage usage of the phone. The phone adapts to the usage patterns of the user and performs the backup process whenever applicable.[11]

The phone also stores the user's photos in the cloud in the resolution appropriate for the phone by default until the user specifies the resolution.[2]

Reception

Sales

Pre-orders after the Kickstarter campaign began in October 2015, with shipping set to start in February 2016.[12] The phone later went on sale in India starting May 30, 2016 on Flipkart.[13]

Known issues

The phone had suffered performance issues upon launch, including lag and slow performance of the camera.[14] These issues were reportedly resolved by Nextbit by releasing software updates in March and April.[15]
