'Sigma Pi Phi' is the the oldest surviving black fraternity and generally considered to be the first black fraternity. Sigma Pi Phi was founded in the United States [1], founded in May 15, 1904 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania . The founders included two doctors, a dentist and a physician [2] . They were Henry McKee Minton, Dr. Algernon B. Jackson, Dr. Edwin C. Howard and Dr. Richard J. Warrick. When Sigma Pi Phi was founded there existed no known black college fraternities, and black professionals were not offered participation in the professional and cultural associations organized by the white community. [3] Sigma Pi Phi has over 5,000 members and 112 chapters Throughout the United States and the West Indies [4] . [5] [6].

The fraternity has provided leadership and service during the Great Depression, World War I, World War II, Civil Rights Movements, and addressed social issues such as urban housing, and other economic, cultural, and political issues affecting people of color.

Members of Sigma Pi Phi include founder of the NAACP WEB Dubois, Ralph Bunche - former UN Ambassador former Atlanta Mayors Andrew Young, former Virginia Govornor Andrew Young, L. Douglas Wilder, American Express President Kenneth Chenault, Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King, Bobby Scott, Ken Blackwell, Ron Brown, Vernon Jordan Arthur Ashe and more [7]. Numerous other American leaders are among the men who have adopted the fraternity’s purpose of "creating a forum wherein they could pursue social and intellectual activities in the company of peers." Membership

Membership to Sigma Pi Phi is exclusive [9]. It is often called "the boule," which means "a council of noblemen." [10] Sigma Pi Phi eliminated undergraduate chapters of it's fraternity during it's infant stages. [11]. The first black fraternity title lay with Alpha kappa nu [12] born in 1903, thus giving Sigma Pi Phi the designation of oldest surviving black fraternity.

Athletic Stars

Arguably the most recognized sports Sigma Pi Phi member, Arthur Ashe. delivered victory after victory in his "tennis" days.

Sigma Pi Phi hasn't limited membership to professionals, but to all those who are accomplished no matter what field. Arther Ashe a famed african american tennis star, as well as Hank Aaron MLB Homerun Record holder [13] is amongst it's members.

Civil Rights Movement

Arguably the most recognized Sigma Pi Phi member, Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial during the 1963 March on Washington.

Members of Sigma Pi Phi (including Dr. Martin Luther King took on key roles during the later stages of the civil rights movement [14][15] [16] . In Montgomery, Dr. King led the people in the Montgomery Bus Boycott as a minister, and later as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).

Controversy

There has been controversy concerning whom is actually the first black fraternity [17], even where it was founded [18]. Sigma Pi Phi is the oldest surviving black fraternity. Alpha Kappa Nu is the first black fraternity as well as the first black inter-collegiate fraternity.

Hazing

There is no documented cases of hazing within the organization. [19]
