The accompanying video was released on July 6, 2017 and moves between grim black-and-white and hopeful, vivid color. At the start of the video, Kesha speaks in monologue. "Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams, those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever?… If there is a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I've ever known, I've ever loved?" Kesha plays the piano while outfitted in angel wings. At the end of the music video, she appears to walk on water.

"Praying"
Song

"Praying" is a song by American recording artist Kesha. It was released as the lead single for her third studio album Rainbow (2017) on July 5, 2017, following an announcement made on her Instagram page. It was written alongside Ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis of Macklemore. An accompanying music video was released the same day.

Background

Kesha spent the summer of 2016 on her third world tour, the Kesha and the Creepies: Fuck the World Tour, which commenced on July 23, 2016, in Las Vegas and ended on October 29, 2016, in Maine. The tour included various covers of songs and several rock and country reworks of her own hit singles.[1][2] During this time on tour, she wrote many songs for Rainbow. Praying was written sometime between January 2014 when Kesha checked herself into a Rehab clinic and October 2016, when she announced she had finished recording 22 songs and had handed them to her record label.[3][4][5][6]

Composition

Praying was written by Kesha, alongside Ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis of Macklemore. [7] "Praying" address an unspecified tormentor: "You brought the flames and you put me through hell/ I had to learn how to fight for myself/ And we both know all the truth I could tell/ I'll just say this: I wish you farewell." Kesha punctuates some lines by rising into a ragged, forceful wail. She is joined on the track by distant backing vocals and a few darting violins.

Music video

The accompanying video was released on July 6, 2017 and moves between grim black-and-white and hopeful, vivid color. At the start of the video, Kesha speaks in monologue. "Am I dead? Or is this one of those dreams, those horrible dreams that seem like they last forever?… If there is a God or whatever, something, somewhere, why have I been abandoned by everyone and everything I've ever known, I've ever loved?" Kesha plays the piano while outfitted in angel wings. At the end of the music video, she appears to walk on water.
