Dexter Gore, Jr. (born September 6, 1993),[1] better known by his stage name Famous Dex, is an American hip hop recording artist from Chicago, Illinois. He is well known for his songs, which include "Drip From My Walk", "Energy", "Hit 'Em With It", and "2 Times".[2][3]
Early life
Dexter Gore, Jr. was born on September 6, 1993 in Harlem, New York City, and raised in Chicago, Illinois.[4] He attended Paul Robeson High School with fellow hometown rapper Lil Durk.[5]
Career
In 2011, Dex decided to become a rapper. He later developed the alias Black Migo Dex.[6] In 2013, he received the advanced attention with the respective remixes of Chief Keef's "Kobe" and in 2014, with Dej Loaf's "Try Me". In 2014 he released the single "Bottle After Bottle".[7]
However, after a short period of using his stage name, he decided to rename himself Famous Dex.[citation needed] Then, in 2015, he self-released his first mixtape, Never Seen It Coming. The mixtape was downloaded below 100,000 times, but its track, "Duh Dummy!", gained popularity.[8] Later that year, he released his second mixtape, Dexter's Laboratory; the title of this mixtape is the same as the critically praised Cartoon Network original animated television series.[9] In early 2016, Famous Dex released his third and fourth mixtapes, Drippy and #OhhMannGoddDamn, respectively.[10] Dex grew to population again with the respective singles, "Drip from My Walk" and "2 Times".[3] He later recruited Rich the Kid and Wiz Khalifa for the latter's remix.[11] In the summer of 2016, Dex announced that he was officially signed to Rich the Kid's label, Rich Forever Music, through a distribution deal with 300 Entertainment, under the aegis of Atlantic Records.[12][13][14] Shortly thereafter, Dex and Rich released their collaborative effort, "Rich Forever", a song with the same name as the latter artist's label.[15]
In March 2017, Dex announced his debut album, Dex Meets Dexter, for a mid-2017 release.[16]
Controversy
On September 20, 2016, Famous Dex was caught on camera, allegedly assaulting his former girlfriend in a hallway of his bodyguard's house.[17][18] Fifteen minutes later, he trashed R&B musician Tish Hyman's apartment.[19] Three days later, Dex was terminated from his endorsement deal with shoe manufacturer Puma, which he signed eight months ago.[20][21]
