On 17 August 2017, a white van hit pedestrians on Las Ramblas, Barcelona, leaving at least two people dead and dozens injured. Two armed men then entered a Turkish restaurant and took hostages.[1][2]

At around 4:30pm[?], a white van drove onto the pavement of Barcelona's Las Ramblas, crashing into pedestrians between Plaça Catalunya and Gran Teatre del Liceu[3].

The driver fled as the emergency protocol was deployed. First reports confirmed two deaths and dozens of injured people.[4]

Reactions

Gàbia operation was deployed by Mossos d'Esquadra in order to locate the perpetrator(s). All events in Barcelona were cancelled, and both Carles Puigdemont and Ada Colau cancelled their holidays so as to return to the city and take part in the crisis management.[5]
