The Thomas Fire is a current wildfire burning in the hills north of the southern California cities of Ventura and Santa Paula. The fire began north of Santa Paula, near Steckel Park and Thomas Aquinas College.[1] It has burned approximately 10,000 acres (4,000 ha) and resulted in one death.[2][1] Officials blame strong winds for the fire's sudden explosion in size after starting as a small brush fire earlier in the evening.[3] Highway 150 was partially shutdown due to the fire and numerous areas lost power as a result of damages to the fire.[citation needed]
