Despite the cited source "verifying" Wikipedia's statement, i have empirical evidence to the contrary. All three of the Reddit threads i've visited today (i rarely visit Reddit) offer Shortlinks to themselves:

My point of view is, i don't use Reddit enough to boldly edit this article, but i do believe this article is missing some information, only i'm not sure if this is the correct ''part'' of the article to include the missing information. i would appreciate any thoughts or help anyone could add to this subject. Other features. And feature comparison of URL shorteners.

1) It should be in the lede that most of these services create a random URL. eg jO3u6

2) Some do not have the option of a user defined string as shown in the lede: goo.gl no, TinyURL yes.

3) Some allow the extending of the short URL with subpages. goo.gl no, TinyURL yes.

4) goo.gl/maps, can only be a Google Map, youtu.be can only be a YouTube video. It should mention that this is a security feature, as the user knows which website it links to.

reddit ENCOURAGES shortlinking?

An excerpt from the URL_shortening#Blocking_and_banning section:

The Reddit community strongly discourages – and in some subreddits, outright bans – URL shortening services for link submissions, because they disguise the origin domain name and whether the link has previously been submitted to Reddit, and there are few or no legitimate reasons to use link shorteners for Reddit link submissions.[1]

Despite the cited source "verifying" Wikipedia's statement, i have empirical evidence to the contrary. All three of the Reddit threads i've visited today (i rarely visit Reddit) offer Shortlinks to themselves:

says, "Shortlink: https://redd.it/3fe1lx"
which links to https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/3fe1lx/runtime_broker_cpu_usage_fix/
says, "Shortlink: https://redd.it/7lm7nh"
which links to https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/7lm7nh/these_stupid_games_keep_reinstalling_on_a_fully/
says, "Shortlink: https://redd.it/7lgme1"
which links to https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/7lgme1/wolframalpha_is_free_on_the_microsoft_store/
(side note: It's not free in all markets.))

Many of the truths we cling to depend greatly upon our own point of view. Consider these two facts which seem mutually exclusive but are not:

  • James T. Kirk is the captain of the starship Enterprise.
  • Jean-Luc Picard is the captain of the starship Enterprise.

My point of view is, i don't use Reddit enough to boldly edit this article, but i do believe this article is missing some information, only i'm not sure if this is the correct part of the article to include the missing information. i would appreciate any thoughts or help anyone could add to this subject.
