Introduction

The Alan and Sue Leighton School of Nursing is part of Marian University, a private, non-profit school located in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States.

Established in 1977 as the Marian College School of Nursing, the school has been housed in the Michael A. Evans Center for Health Sciences on the university’s main campus since 2013. It shares the building with the Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine[1].

Part of Marian University, the Leighton School of Nursing frames its curriculum within the context of the Catholic Franciscan values of the university’s founders, the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, Indiana. As such, the curricula for all its programs are designed to teach nursing students how to take a holistic approach to patient care, which focuses on treating the mind, body, and spirit[2].

History

Louis C. Gatto, Ph.D., who served as president of Marian College from 1971-1989, pushed for the development and implementation of an LPN-to-associate degree in nursing[3]. The program launched with curriculum approval from the Indiana State Board of Nursing (ISBN) in 1977. Gatto also supported the launch of the college’s four-year Bachelor of Science degree in nursing, which started in 1987 with ISBN approval. The National League for Nursing has also accredited both programs — the associate in 1986 and the baccalaureate in 1992[4].

The Leighton School of Nursing has added other baccalaureate, masters and doctoral nursing programs throughout the years. It began offering an on-campus accelerated program in 1994[5], and launched an online-based accelerated BSN program in 2009[6]. The online-based accelerated nursing program in Nashville received approval by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and the Tennessee Board of Nursing in 2014 and began classes May 12, 2014[7].

In more recent years, it added The School of Nursing’s Master of Science in Nursing Education program at the start of the 2016-17 academic year[8] and a Doctor of Nursing Practice program, which began in May 2017[9].

Affiliations and Accreditation

The Leighton School of Nursing is accredited at the national, regional, and state levels. Marian University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC)[10]. The Leighton School of Nursing meets the approval of the Indiana State Board of Nursing (IBSN) ; all its baccalaureate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)[11].

Pass Rate

The Leighton School of Nursing’s BSN NCLEX-RN pass rates for first-time test takers was 87.94% (National Rate = 87.80%), 93.4% in 2015 (National Rate = 87.49%), and 86.12% in 2014 (National Rate = 84.93%)[12].

Programs

Marian University’s Leighton School of Nursing offers various paths for earning a nursing degree:

Undergraduate

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is a four-year program with a six-semester clinical rotation that has a two-step admission process and a direct admit program for highly qualified high school seniors[13]
1. Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN)
  • On-campus
The on-campus accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is a 16-month program available to students with a previous degree. Courses are completed on Marian University’s main campus in Indianapolis. Spring and summer semester courses are five to 16 weeks long, with the final two semesters lasting 16 weeks. On-campus accelerated nursing students complete clinical rotations at area healthcare agencies and simulated laboratory experiences in the Louis C. Gatto Nursing Resource Center[14].
  • Online - Indianapolis
The Marian University online-based ABSN program in Indianapolis is a 16-month full-time program that includes online courses, hands-on learning and clinical rotations through a partnership with the St. Vincent healthcare network.
Students complete nursing theory coursework online via an interactive e-learning platform[15]. During the hands-on learning portion of the program, students practice nursing skills and participate in patient care scenarios that involve the use of medical manikins. These skills and simulation labs take place at the off-site ABSN program site[16].
  • Online - Nashville
Marian University launched an online-based ABSN program in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2014 to address the growing shortage of nurses in Middle Tennessee[17]. The program is headquartered at Saint Thomas West Hospital and combines online courses and hands-on clinical education using the same curriculum model as the online-based ABSN program in Indianapolis.
Students enrolled in this program also complete hours of clinical practice, in addition to a fourth-semester nursing leadership and management course, primarily within the Saint Thomas healthcare network [18].
2. Second Degree Traditional
The second-degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is a three-year program available to students with a previous degree. Courses are completed on Marian University’s main campus in Indianapolis over the course of the university’s traditional fall and spring semesters and contain no online components.
3. RN to BSN
Geared toward RNs seeking a BSN, the school’s RN to BSN Program is offered exclusively online through a partnership with Marian Adult Programs (MAP). The program’s curriculum blends nursing coursework with liberal arts studies and can be completed in as few as 16 months[19].

Graduate

1. Master of Science in Nursing Education
Delivered through a hybrid online, on-site curriculum, the school’s Master of Science in Nursing Education is geared toward students wishing to assume nurse educator roles in schools of nursing, healthcare facilities, and in the community.
The program emulates The Essentials of Mater’s Education in Nursing (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011) and is designed to be completed in two years. To complete this program, students must demonstrate theoretical content with a field-based practicum, which includes a culminating project[20].
2. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
The school’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is designed for registered nurses who wish to pursue the highest level for advanced clinical practice and leadership roles and is delivered via an online, on-campus hybrid curriculum. Courses include systems leadership, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, policy and advocacy, advanced patient care, and others[21].
The DNP program offers two tracks:
  • Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Track
The Family Nurse Practitioner track offers part-time and full-time enrollment options with regular annual summer admission. This program track is designed to prepare registered nurses who hold a baccalaureate degree to deliver acute and chronic healthcare to individuals and families across the lifespan. Students enrolled in this track participate in a transition-to-practice immersion experience that provides clinical education.
  • Nurse Anesthesia Track
The DNP’s Nurse Anesthesia track is a full-time, 36-month program designed to “provide RNs with critical care experience to administer anesthesia in all anesthetic settings to individuals of diverse populations across the lifespan.” The program admits one cohort each year; students enrolled in the program must complete didactic and clinical experiences as well as education in a high-fidelity anesthesia simulation lab. The DNP Nurse Anesthesia Track is accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (COA) and HLC[22].
