Selman Akbulut is a Turkish mathematician and currently a faculty at Michigan State University. He got his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 as student of Robion Kirby. He is a renowned expert on Kirby calculus, low dimensional manifolds and symplectic topology.
