Nick Simmons (born December 18, 1999), known professionally as YBN Nahmir, is an American rapper from Birmingham, Alabama.[1][2] He is best known for his single "Rubbin Off the Paint", which has risen to a peak of 46 on the Billboard Hot 100.[3]
Early life
YBN Nahmir was born on December 18, 1999 in Birmingham, Al. Simmons was raised in a home with his mother, cousins and aunt.[4] His older brothers and his cousins generally would get involved in acts of criminality which influenced Simmons growing up.[5] Simmons attended Clay-Chalkville High School though was pulled out following the success of "Rubbin Off the Paint".[6]
Simmons' interest in music started when he was fourteen years old and was gifted an Xbox 360 for Christmas.[4] Simmons began to play the video game Rock Band (which he would later use to record his first song.)[7] and eventually moved to playing Grand Theft Auto V and then started recording gameplay videos where he would generate a following on YouTube.[8] During his time playing Grand Theft Auto V, Simmons would freestyle in Xbox Live parties and alongside numerous other friends, established the YBN ("Young Boss Niggas") collective.[9] Before producing his own music, Simmons would listen to San Francisco Bay Area rappers like E-40 and credits his style to them.[9]
Career
Simmons uploaded his first song onto YouTube when he was fifteen with fellow YBN member, YBN Almighty Jay. The song, titled "Hood Mentality" was uploaded on March 21, 2015 to barely any reception.[9][10] Simmons uploaded several more songs to YouTube before releasing his first mixtape in January 2, 2017 titled Believe In The Glo on Soundcloud.[11] Simmons uploaded his second mixtape to SoundCloud on January 21, 2017.[12] The first song that Simmons released that got above fifty thousand Soundcloud plays was titled "Why" and according to Simmons, was partly due to being a diss track to numerous Birmingham rappers.[13]
Simmons released "Rubbin Off the Paint" on September 18, 2017 to WorldStarHipHop's YouTube channel.[14] The song quickly went viral with Simmons explaining it as "blowing up overnight."[15] After the success of the song, Simmons was pulled out of school due to his exceptional popularity and forced to start online classes.[4] The song debuted at 79 on the Billboard Hot 100[16] and peaked at 46.[17]
In November 2017, Simmons was involved in controversy following his song being claimed by a record label after his manager sold the instrumental for the song to a third-party.[18] In response, Simmons now has an in-house producer for his instrumentals who is a member of the YBN collective.[4] Simmons released six more tracks in 2017, all failing to chart.
On January 23, 2018, Simmons released "Bounce Out With That" on Lyrical Lemonade's YouTube channel.[19] The song wasn't available on streaming services for up to three days after the release of the music video. The song has accumulated over 12 million views on YouTube a week after its release.[20]
On April 2018 Simmons signed with Atlantic Records.[21]
Musical style
Simmons lists his main influences as rappers from the San Francisco Bay Area such as E-40.[9] Talking on his influences in an interview with Billboard, Simmons stated that the lack of mainstream rappers from Birmingham, Alabama made him listen to more artists from the West Coast such as Eazy-E and Tupac.[22][23]
The Fader has compared Simmons' style to that of Bay Area rappers, saying that his rap flow and slang are influenced and sound similar to artists from the San Francisco Bay Area.[4] Talking on his style, Simmons said "I'm not a mumble rapper either. I speak the facts. Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti speak that party hot-shit. It's that Atlanta type of style. My sound is inventive."[24]
Personal life
Simmons currently lives in Los Angeles, California.[22] Speaking on his high school education, Simmons says that following his withdrawal from traditional high school, he has since fallen behind in his online classes but he still plans to graduate.[25] He will be graduating from Clay-Chalkville High School May 2018.[26]
