Soren Marcus Kaplan (born November 27, 1968) is an American open innovation expert[1], author, professor, entrepreneur, consultant and keynote speaker. He is an Affiliated Professor at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, founder of the consulting firm InnovationPoint[2] [3] and co-founder of the collaboration software company upBOARD. He is a columnist for the Innovate column of Inc. Magazine[4], regularly contributes to Fast Company Magazine[5] and writes about innovation for Harvard Business Review.[6]

Early life and career

Kaplan was born and raised in Northern California. He attended public schools in Walnut Creek, California and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles.

In 1992, Kaplan began working as a consultant for IdeaScope Associates, one of the first innovation consulting firms in California. There he worked with clients including 3M, P&G, and Siemens. Some of his early work on strategic innovation work was published in the Journal of Creativity & Innovation Management under the title of "Harnessing the Power of Strategic Innovation".[7]

In 1996, Kaplan became manager of Business Innovation & Technology Solutions at HP, where he worked globally to drive strategy, product and service innovation, and transformational change within the organisation.

In 2001, Kaplan co-founded iCohere, Inc. with his father Pascal.[8] iCohere, Inc. became one of the world's first online learning and collaboration platforms, and grew into a leader in the collaboration software space.[9]
