Shirleen Roeder is a Geneticist and was Eugene Higgins Professor of Genetics and HHMI investigator[1] in the Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology Department at Yale University before her retirement in 2012; in 2018 she is Professor Emeritus there.[2] She is noted for identifying and characterizing the yeast genes that regulate the process of meiosis with particular emphasis on synpapsis.[3] She discovered two distinct processes that regulate the recombination between chromosomes in meiosis and also a process inhibiting recombination.[4] Shirleen Roeder was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009.[4]  She was chosen as a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science[5] and elected to the American Academy of Microbiology in 2010.[3]
