Map of the regions and zones of Ethiopia

Oromia Special Zone Surrounding Addis Abeba is one of the zones of the Oromia Region in Ethiopia. It was created at 2008 from former Burayu Special Zone and parts of Semien (North) Shewa, Misraq (East) Shewa, Debub Mirab (Southwest) Shewa and Mirab (West) Shewa Zones.[1] This zone is surrounding the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Abeba, which is called Finfinne in the Oromo language. The main reason for creating this special zone was to ease the co-operation and development of surrounding areas of Addis Abeba and to control the urban sprawl of this city on the lands of Oromia. The administrative center of this zone is in Addis Abeba.

Demographics

As the special zone was created after the census of 2007 it's hard to find correct data about the population of zone. The estimated size of population according to 2007 census conducted by the CSA is 794,489, of which 228,420 or 28.75% were urban dwellers.[2][permanent dead link]
