Metropolitan Makariy (Maletych)

Metropolitan Makariy (born Mikolai Ivanovich Maletych (Ukrainian: Микола Іванович Малетич), October 1, 1944, in Krasne, Turka Raion, Lviv Oblast, Ukrainian SSR) is the former Archbishop of Lviv and a retired bishop of the unified Orthodox Church of Ukraine.[1][2]

Biography

He graduated in theology as part of the Russian Orthodox Church, and on August 10, 1975, he was ordained a priest under this church. He served mainly in Ukraine and the Rostov region. In 1982, he graduated in Moscow from the Moscow Seminary.

In 1989, he resigned from the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) and became associated with the non-canonical Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC).

From November 1996 he was a bishop of Lviv UAOC and then he also took over jurisdiction over the Volyn dioceses. In 2011, Makary was raised to the dignity of the Metropolitan of Lviv. After the death of the current head of UAOC Metropolitan Methodius, metropolitan Makary was elected by the extraordinary Bishops' Council as the guardian of the Metropolitan Throne of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church until the election of a successor to Metropolitan Methodius.

On 4 June 2015, Makary was elected as Metropolitan and the new head of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
