History

ThatsMEonTV (2006-2013)

The creator of Cocomelon, Jay Jeon, considered YouTube, then a newly-released website, as a potential platform for education. Then known as ThatsMEonTV uploaded their first two videos, two versions of the Alphabet Song, to YouTube on 1 September 2006. This was followed nine months later with their third upload, "Learning ABC Alphabet – Letter "K" – Kangaroo Game". Most videos on the channel taught a single alphabet with a typical length of between 1-2 minutes. The channel continued to release ABC themed videos, eventually rebranding to ABCkidTV in 2013.

ABCkidsTV (2013-2018)

Newer videos in the ABCkidsTV era of CocoMelon featured a new logo and jingle. Following rebranding, ABCkidsTV began remastering older videos that had become stale due to progress in animation technology. This would be followed by a transition from Alphabet themed content to nursery rhymes and a longer average video length. Nursery rhyme videos were uploaded more frequently while older alphabet videos lasting about one minute were combined into compilations due to how short they were, introducing the concept of compilation style YouTube videos as an alternative for TV. The channel also began transitioning into 3D animation, with their first 3D character being used in Twinkle Tinkle Little Star on April 8th, 2016. The video featured a 3D flying star guiding 2D characters through the sky. 3D animation video uploads became more frequent, with some videos even using motion capture technology. Animation and music production continued to improve, and establishing a reoccurring cast of characters.
