Mary Wagner (born 1974) is a Canadian anti-abortion activist and convicted criminal.[1]

Biography

She protested in private abortion clinics in Toronto.[2] Wagner was arrested for the first time in 2012.[3] Following a nearly two-year-long trial, Judge Fergus O'Donnell found Wagner guilty of the charges, sentencing her to nine-month imprisonment and a two-year probationary limitation on being around abortion clinics.[4] She left prison on June 12, 2014.

On December 23, 2014, after entering the Bloor West Village Women's Clinic abortion facility in Toronto she was arrested again and charged with disruption of business operations.[5][6][7]

On December 12, 2016, Wagner was detained once again inside the abortion center in Bloor West Village on the day she effectively discouraged one of the women from aborting.[8][9] She was charged and sentenced to 9 months of imprisonment.[10][11][12][13][14][15]

In August 2017 Polish state TV reported that Wagner's mother appealed to Poles to send letters supporting Wagner to a Canadian judge who considering appropriate sentencing for Wagner.[16]

Awards

Mary Wagner received a Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Canadian Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott issued her certificate with the words: “Your faithful battle for justice for pre-born children, with your willingness to suffer hardship and personal deprivation, is a source of strength and inspiration for many. May God richly bless your sacrifice for these most innocent victims.”[17] Because she was in jail awaiting trial, Vellacott justified the award by saying, "Peaceful civil disobedience is an appropriate method when trying to protect defenceless, voiceless human beings"[18]

She was nominated for the 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by 42 MEPs, mentioning her work safeguarding the rights of those who cannot speak for themselves.[19]
