Ryan Gariepy (born October 25, 1986) is a Canadian engineer, roboticist, and technology entrepreneur. He co-founded Clearpath Robotics with Matt Rendall, Bryan Webb, and Patrick Martinson in 2009[1], and subsidiary OTTO Motors in 2015[2]. Gariepy currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer of both Clearpath Robotics and OTTO Motors. He was an intern at Kiva Systems in 2007 (now Amazon Robotics)[3].

Early Life

Ryan Gariepy was born in Barrie, Ontario[4], on October 25, 1986. He later entered the University of Waterloo, and obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechatronics Engineering in 2009, and a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2012.

Career

While pursuing his masters degree, Gariepy co-founded Clearpath Robotics, also in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, focused on streamlining field robotics research for universities and private corporations. In 2012, Gariepy became a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Open Source Robotics Foundation[5]. He also serves as a co-organizer for the Robot Operating System Developer Conference, dating back to 2012[6].

Gariepy's business and personal interests have led to his involvement in multiple other industry, not-for-profit, and technology organizations, including as a founding member of the Board of Directors of Next Generation Manufacturing Canada[7] [8], an IEEE keynote speaker[9], and Robotics Faculty Member with Singularity University Canada [10]. He is also an associate with Creative Destruction Lab's Space program alongside luminaries such as Chris Hadfield and Anousheh Ansari [11].

He appears to be a key person involved in the Clearpath Robotics partnership with Boston Dynamics[12][13].

Advocacy

In 2014 Gariepy is often credited as the first roboticist and first entrepreneur to openly pledge not to make 'killer robots' (Lethal autonomous weapons)[14][15], and continues to back initiatives to ensure AI and autonomous systems are developed ethically[16].

He has also commented publicly on the social changes widespread automation will bring, as well as the need to conduct further studies regarding basic income[17][18][19].
