Chitrasen Sahu(12 October 1992) is an Indian mountaineer,[1] inclusion and disability right activist. [2] He is India's first double amputee [3]to scale Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mount Kosciusko (Australia). [4] He is also a three times national wheelchair basketball player. [5][6][7] [8]

On 4th June 2014 while travelling on a train, his hands slipped, he fell in between the train and the platform and both of his legs got badly damaged. With help from the RPF personnel present he was admitted to a hospital in Raipur and after 24 days his both legs were amputated.[9]

Early Life and Career

Born in a small village Beloudi of Balod district, Chhattisgarh.[10] He did schooling from a government school in his village and bachelors degree in civil engineering from government engineering college Bilaspur. He got selected in the air force and was preparing for defence services and other competitive exams before the accident happened in which he lost his both legs. [11] [12] [13]

Train Accident

Chitrasen boarded the Amarkantak Express train from Raipur to Bilaspur on 04 June 2014, and the accident happened at Bhatapatra station before Bilaspur junction. On this day he was travelling back from his home, by train. At a station on the way, he got down to get some water. By the time he could buy and get back, the train slowly started moving. He ran for a short distance and tried to board the moving train. Unfortunately, the handle on the door was oiled or greased, he slipped, lost his balance and fell down.[14]

Initially, police suspected that he was either attempting suicide or met with an accident while crossing the railway tracks. When he was not able to convince, the flagman of the train came forward and explained the incident in detail. It was then he was taken to the hospital where his one leg got amputated immediately and twenty-four days later, his second leg too got amputated, due to medical negligence.[15]

Mountaineering

He started with small treks and self-training.[16]

He then met Rahul Gupta, an experienced mountaineer from Chattisgarh, who helped Chitrasen to plan for the bigger conquests.[17]

Chitrasen Sahu started his 7 Summit plan by starting with Mount Kilimanjaro. The training took over a year with practice on different trekking locations. It was six days of treacherous trek and temperature of -10 to -15 degree[18] conditions in which Chitrasen Sahu reached the summit on September 23 2019. [19] [20]

Chitrasen Sahu also scaled Mount Kosciuszko - the highest peak in Australia, on 2nd March 2020. [21] [22]

Mission Inclusion

Through his "Mission Inclusion",[23] he wants to reach out to both - the society and the people with disabilities. As he said in an interview, "All Focus is on to make everyone understand that it is not sympathy which is needed, but rather heartfelt empathy to understand and create an accessible and inclusive environment." [24]

He also faced challanges in getting a licence for a car which he had purchased and modified. He had to go through legal procedures before getting a judgement from the high court of Bilaspur which was in his favour and it opened the gates for many people with disabilities to own a motor vehicle license.[25]

He is also known by the name of "Half human Robo"[26]
