Ape Amma was born in Colombo. She was really interested in cooking from her childhood. She lived walking distance to the Port of Colombo, people from different communities around Sri Lanka and India specially Telugu and Malayalam speaking community, lived close to the Port of Colombo. So many families living around this area cooked different dishes from different communities. Because she lived together with many families like that, so she had to practice to cook different recipes from different cultures from small days. And her grandfather used to practice Sri lankan folk medicine, so she got more knowledge about folk medicine from her mother. |

She was the youngest girl in the family, her mother was busy most of the time because she was doing sari embroidery at home, and was a big help to her mother in cooking because her elder sisters were in studying in hostels. She used to teach different subjects in those schools also worked as home science teacher. |
