That is, the geographic region known as the Caucasus is defined as including the following areas, typically defined by the political boundaries of its constituents:
- The North Caucasus — including the Russian federal subjects (republics and krai) of Adygea, Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar Krai, North Ossetia–Alania, and Stavropol Krai
- The Transcaucasus — including the countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia; their autonomous republics of Abkhazia (Georgia), Adjara (Georgia), Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic (Azerbaijan) as well as Nagorno-Karabakh.
- It is included within the larger geographic region of temperate Asia, and is in the Eurasia region of Eastern Europe and Western Asia.
