A Thousand Pictures is American musician Craig Chaquico's third solo album as a contemporary jazz artist after a 16-year long career playing lead guitar, composing songs, and co-producing for the San Francisco-based rock bands he co-founded, Jefferson Starship and Starship. A Thousand Pictures, was released in 1996 by Higher Octave Music. There are several guest spots on several of the tracks by jazz saxophonist, Richard Eliot, and the smooth jazz group, 3rd Force.[2] The album is co-produced by Ozzie Ahlers. A Thousand Pictures is an enhanced CD containing videos, interviews, and other materials playable on a CD-ROM drive as well as any CD player.[3]
Background and recording
When Chaquico left Starship in 1990, he began looking for a new musical direction. His first musical venture following his tenure with Starship was the formation of his own band, Big Bad Wolf. After only one eponymous album recorded in 1992, but not released until 1998, they disbanded and Chaquico embarked on a solo career as a jazz and new age instrumentalist that showcased his acoustic music.
Recording
The album was recorded at Chaquico's Lunatunes Studio in Mill Valley, California, mixed at Auravision Studios in Ojai, California, and mastered at Quad Tech Studios in Los Angeles. Saxophone sessions were recorded at Suncoast Recording, Woodland Hills, CA.
Accolades
Steven McDonald says about A Thousand Pictures: "Craig Chaquico has found a nice groove, one that he develops very nicely in this smooth, low-key album. The primary focus is Chaquico's elegant guitar playing, though there are guest spots on the album (Richard Elliot and 3rd Force). The tones are interesting; the overall feeling is a very settled one. The music grabs your attention without resorting to anything outrageous, making for a very enjoyable set."[4]
