Panda

Panda (also known as PXNDX) is a Mexican punk band formed in Monterrey, Nuevo León in 1997.

History

The band began with four boys, Pepe, Riki, Ongi and Kross, who had joined to write songs on topics such as love, friends, getting dumped, skating, surfing, partying, and youth. Which makes them a unique band. They produced sufficient material to compile a demo, and with it acquired a contract with a local indie record label called Movic Records.

In 2001, they released their first album, Arroz con Leche, which was relatively unpopular in the local musical scene. However, with their 2003 follow-up, La Revancha del Príncipe Charro, the group began gaining popularity in the country.

They toured in Mexico and the United States. After a prolonged break, Panda began recording their next album. It was then that Ongi left them. They replaced him with a friend of the band, Arturo Arredondo, who had already played with Kross in another local group, Super Azfalto, and whose abilities were already well-known to the band members.

A third album, Para ti con desprecio, was released in 2005. It is their most popular album to date in Mexico and Latin America. The singles that are most well-known include "Cita en el Quirofano" (#3 MEX), "Cuando no es como deberia ser" (#1 MEX) and "Disculpa los malos pensamientos" (#1 MEX). They won the "Best Indie Band" award at the MTV Video Music Awards Latin America 2005.

In October 2 2006, the band released their fourth album Amantes Sunt Amentes, and its first single "Narcisista por excelencia" which released in September 2006.

Plagiarism Issues

In 2006 just when their popularity was risen Panda was accused of plagiarism, an Internet page *[1] [www.apestan.com] posted a list of emo/punk American bands songs which supposedly panda had stolen lyrics, melodies and guitar riffs. The similarity of Panda’s songs with these songs was disturbing. There was a huge media movement showing up Panda’s little antics. Later in a radio station interview, Pepe, Panda’s singer, denied all these accusations, arguing that the similarity with their songs was merely coincidence.

All these media accusations just increased the sells of their third album Para ti con desprecio, proven that Mexican audience does not care about composer’s rights and plagiarism. It is well known that Mexico is one of the countries that less supports the musical scene and rights. 85% of total record Mexican sells are pirate. The piracy now goes on, not only with pirate cd's sells, but with plagiarized songs as well.
