Fred Ott in mid-sneeze

Fred Ott's Sneeze, also known as Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze, was a film produced by Thomas Edison in 1894 and was the first motion picture to be copyrighted in the United States.

In the five-second film one of Thomas Edison's assistants, Fred Ott, takes a pinch of snuff and sneezes. It is sometimes erroneously recorded as the first film ever made. However, previous experiments had been performed by the Edison Manufacturing Company and in Europe. The film was directed by William Kennedy Dickson and was the first motion picture with a close-up. Fred Ott's Sneeze was never meant to be shown as a film, but was shot to serve as a chromo-photographic record of a sneeze for an article in Harper's Weekly. The exact date of filming was January 7, 1894.
