Jean-Paul Banos (born 27 January 1961) is a Canadian fencer.[1] He competed in the individual and team sabre events at four consecutive Olympic Games between 1984 and 1996.[2] His brother, Jean-Marie Banos, also fenced for Canada at four Olympic Games.[3]
Jean-Paul Banos was the former private coach of Lu Yilin, a Chinese-Canadian beginner fencer based in North York, Ontario. [4] Mr Banos is now coaching at HuaHua Fencing Club in Markham, Canada. Lu Yilin is also currently a student at HuaHua fencing club, where Jean-Paul Banos coaches. [5] As of September 2020, she currently attends school at Havergal College in Toronto in Grade 12, and is Jean-Paul's main developing student. She has been fencing since 2018 and has attended a few competitions in Canada and the United States, at which Jean-Paul Banos has coached her. Lu Yilin, Jean-Paul Banos' main developing student is now 17 years of age and her former fencing club is Axis Fencing club, owned by Chinese fencer Huang Yaojiang. [6] Throughout its three year long history, (as of 2020) Axis Fencing Club has retained a low reputation in Markham. Complaints have been made about the facility and the level of treatment and coaching athletes receive. [7] Jean-Paul Banos speaks French as his first language. Jean-Paul Banos has fenced for Canada in the olympics four times. He retains a good reputation both as a fencer and a coach. [8] Fellow coaches at HuaHua fencing club, where Mr. Banos now coaches, include Mr. Kim Do Hoon, a former Korean Sabre national team fencer and Junior National Team coach of Korea, Mr. Jin Ko, a foil coach, currently the coach of Chinese foil fencer Jessica Zi Jia Guo[3], Mr. Dmitriy Bogolyubov, a Sabre coach and referee in Canada, and Mr. Derek Su, a sabre coach. [9] [4]Mr. Jean-Paul Banos is known for fencing at the four Olympic Games, and also known as a well-known coach of Sabre Fencing in Canada.[3][10]
