Richmond Primary School is a coeducational R–7 school (5- to 13-year-olds) located in the Adelaide inner suburb of Keswick. It was constructed in 1898 [2] in Keswick, South Australia located in the Federal Division of Adelaide, the State Electorate of Badcoe and City of West Torrens.

History

The Laying of the Foundation Stone (extract)

The Chairman of the Thebarton School Board of Advice, Mr. Thomas Hardy, laid the foundation-stone of the new school. Among those present were the Minister of Education, Hon. R.Butler, M.P., the ex-Minister, Hon. Dr. Cockburn, Inspectors L. W. Stanton, Burgan, and C. L. Whitman, members of the Education Board; Messrs. T. Brooker, T. Price, F. J. Hourigan, M.P.s; the members of the Thebarton School Board of Advice, the Superintendent of Public Buildings, Mr. C. E.Owen Smyth, and Messrs. J. Bath, Secretary to the Minister of Education, and H. A. Curtis, Secretary to the Education Board. The stone bore the inscription: - “This stone was laid by Thomas Hardy, Esq., Chairman of the Board of Advice, April 26, 1898.” The building, including a teacher’s residence, will cost about £1,200, and will provide accommodation for 100 children, and as it is situated in the centre of a growing district it should provide a great boon to the blockers and others whose children now have to walk long distances. [3]

Three of people who attended the laying of the foundation stone (Price, Butler, and Cockburn) were to become future Premiers of South Australia.

On 25 September 1898, Mr Josiah Percival Willmott was appointed as the first headmaster and 172 students enrolled in the first term, transferring from Goodwood, Sturt Street or Thebarton schools. [4]

Local Heritage Listing

The original building attained local heritage status[5] from the City of West Torrens on 2 October 2008.

Improvements

A new Infant School (on the western side of South Rd) was officially opened by The Hon. Minister for Education Mr Malcolm McIntosh on December 16 1929. The original Infant School site is now the Warriappendi School.

Present Day

In 2019, Richmond Primary School was ranked the 4th best government / public primary school in South Australia based on NAPLAN tests. There was no NAPLAN testing in 2020 due to COVID-19.

In 2020 Richmond Primary School had enrolment of approximately 400 students from Reception to Year 7.[7]

From 2022 Year 7 students will transition to High School and the range of classes will span from Reception to Year 6.

Special Programs

Intensive English Language Program (IELP)

Richmond Primary Intensive English Language Program (IELP) provides intensive English language support for newly arrived students from 5 to 12 years of age. Students with a language and cultural background other than English who have limited or minimal English are eligible to enrol within their first 12 – 18 months of arrival.[8]

Notable Students

North to South Corridor - Torrens to Darlington Project (T2D)

The T2D Project is the last 10.5km piece in the North to South Corridor (South Rd Upgrade), the largest infrastructure project ever undertaken in South Australia. Richmond Primary School is located on South Rd, south of the Richmond Rd intersection. Richmond Rd is a major freight transport route to Adelaide Airport and for general traffic into and from the Adelaide City Centre.

In June 2021, the South Australian State government released concept plans that shows access to Richmond Rd from the T2D from the North only, potentially reducing impact to the school.
