Control copyright icon Hello Fryboy Editor! Your additions to Big 5 Sporting Goods have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. rsjaffe 🗩 🖉 03:58, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Blocked

Stop icon
You have been blocked indefinitely from editing certain namespaces ((Article) and Draft) for copyright violations.
If you think there are good reasons for being unblocked, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the following text below the block notice on your talk page: {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}}.  Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI guide 04:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This user's unblock request has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without good reason (see the blocking policy).

Request reason:

I am just trying to give articles a good history and everybody attacks me and it really just ticks me off. Do I write it in my own words? You never told me how I should update the history. This block is quite unfair. Wikipedia is my life and you guys trying to take it away breaks my heart. And IM NOT AUTOBLOCKED!

Decline reason:

In order to lift the block, we need to be certain that you understand how copyright works on Wikipedia. To allow the reviewing administrator to assess your understanding, please respond to the following questions in your next unblock appeal, explaining in your own words:

  • What is copyright?
  • How is Wikipedia licenced?
  • Why is copyrighted content not allowed on Wikipedia?
  • Under what circumstances can we use copyrighted content?
  • How do you intend to avoid violating the copyright policy in the future?

Your answers will enable us to establish whether or not you should be unblocked. Yamla (talk) 10:49, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

You have received 1 2 3 4 5 6 warnings for copyright violations, with the sixth one being labeled a final warning. The above section regarding this edit to Big 5 Sporting Goods, where you added four paragraphs copied from https://www.big5sportinggoods.com/store/company/History, shows to me that you still do not have adequate understanding of copyright. Because of this, I am blocking you- I have no personal issue with you, it's just that my duty as an admin is to protect the encyclopedia from harmful edits. Yes, you need to write all content in your own words- you cannot copy from other websites, and if you copy between Wikipedia pages, you must make of note of it in the edit summary. If you want to be unblocked, you must commit to not copying from sources and commit to attributing when copying content between articles. Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment, or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Thank you. rsjaffe 🗩 🖉 04:35, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fryboy Editor I promise I won't copyright anymore but how can I commit to attribute when I'm blocked? If you want you can unblock me right now and I'll just stick to updated or fixing infoboxes if that makes you happy.

I promise I won't copyright anymore... You'll have to be more specific in how you understand what you did is wrong and what you will differently going forward. When it comes to attributing content from another wikipedia article, add a note that reads like copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution in the edit summary when copying something over. Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI guide 05:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fryboy Editor I know what I did is wrong, and I won't do that anymore. I just like to edit/upgrade infoboxes. I won't copy stuff without a valid reason. I won't violate copyright anymore.

For reference:

  • You can almost never copy from anywhere online. This also applies to very slightly rewording what a source says (see the close paraphrasing guideline). This also applies to images. However, you must source your information using a citation (see referencing for beginners for help on that front).
  • The one main exception to this is copying from other Wikipedia articles, where you must attribute which article you copied the text from, usually in the edit summary or on the talk page using the {{Copied}} template.

By saying you will not violate copyrights, this is what you are agreeing to follow; this is what all Wikipedia editors must follow. If you need any help, you can send me a message on my talk page. Sorry if this comes across harshly – it's somewhat meant to, but I also do want to help you as much as I can. Skarmory (talk • contribs) 06:23, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fryboy Editor Yes, I agree I will follow all of the rules. I just want to be unblocked. Is that too much too ask? I feel like I've stated my reasoning. I'll just stick to editing infoboxes.

I would like to see you unblocked, I really would. But I'm still not sure if you know what you did wrong. It sounds like you're saying something to get out of this situation that you're still not sure you got into, if that makes sense. You'll need to be clearer about what you did wrong. Moneytrees🏝️Talk/CCI guide 06:59, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fryboy Editor I know what I did was wrong, and I know not to ever violate copyright and copy text without explaining why.

Fryboy Editor Fine. If you won't unblock me than I quit. Screw you all.
