Lost Ark[a] is an isometric 2.5D fantasy massively multiplayer online action role-playing game (MMOARPG).[1][2] It is co-developed by Tripod Studio and Smilegate's game development subsidiary Smilegate RPG.[3] It was fully released in the South Korean region on November 12, 2018.[4] The game is releasing in European and North American regions on February 11, 2022, where it will be published by Amazon Games.[1][5][6]
Lost Ark won six game awards in various categories at the Korea Game Awards 2019.[7] Developing the game cost about $85.4 million.[8]
Gameplay
Lost Ark is primarily focused on PvE and exploration (questing, achievement/collectible hunting, crafting, etc.) but features PvP elements as well.[citation needed] Players start by customizing their character which they can then level up by completing the storyline.[citation needed] Reaching level 50 unlocks access to tiered endgame dungeons and raids, at which point all further progress is tied to the character's gear score.[citation needed]
Development
Lost Ark's development began in 2011[9] under the codename Project T.[10][11]
The game uses Unreal Engine 3 to render 3D characters in a pseudo-3D isometric environment.[12] As of December 2021, it only supports DirectX 9, with DirectX 11 support scheduled for release in January 2022.[13][14]
Release
Lost Ark was fully released in the South Korean region on November 12, 2018.[4] It is in open beta in the Russian region, and open for closed beta registration in Japan as of June 25, 2020.[2]
The game will release on February 11, 2022 in North America and Europe. Those who bought any of the four founders packs available for the game, will get a three day head start beginning February 8, 2022.[15][16][17] The game will be unavailable in Belgium and the Netherlands owing to some of its in-game reward systems' incompatibility with their loot box legislation.[18]
