Getsu Fūma Den: Undying Moon is a hack-and-slash, action-adventure, roguevania platformer video game co-developed by Konami and GuruGuru and published by Konami. It is the sequel to Getsu Fūma Den and was released on the Nintendo Switch on February 10, 2022, while the Windows version exited early access on February 17, 2022.[1]

Gameplay

GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is a 2.5D hack and slash roguevania platformer. The player controls Getsu Fūma and must guide him through a set of levels with a Japanese-styled ukiyo-e art style. While exploring the levels, the player has the ability to acquire several moves inspired by Japanese martial arts, and can pick up customizable weapons. The game's combat centers around mastery of spacing, timing, and learning enemy attack patterns. If the player dies, they must start from the beginning again. The game features several bosses that the player must defeat at intervals throughout the game.

Plot

The seal to the gate of hell has been set loose by Ryukotsuki after 1,000 years of peace. This causes a massive influx of evil spirits being released into the living world, and Getsu Fūma, as the leader of his clan, must put a stop to it by journeying into hell in order to stop the source of the cataclysm.

Development

On April 14, 2021, Konami unveiled the Getsu Fūma Den: Undying Moon by posting a teaser trailer to their official YouTube channel. They announced that the game would be available for Early Access on Steam on May 13, 2021.[2] Those who purchased the Early Access version of the game would receive certain perks such as a digital mini soundtrack and digital art book. It was also announced that they would receive a port of the original Getsu Fūma Den. This port includes menus in both Japanese and English; however, the rest of the game is not translated. The game released in February 2022 for both Nintendo Switch and Windows.

Reception

Getsu Fūma Den: Undying Moon received "mixed or average" reviews according to review aggregator Metacritic.

Destructoid gave the game a 6.5 out of 10, likening the game feel to Dead Cells while criticizing the poorly designed roguelike structure, and wrote, "That’s not to say that GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is bad. It didn’t succeed in completely killing my enthusiasm for a new game in a forgotten series. No. It just made me want a deeper, more polished experience, and that’s not the worst thing for a game to do." Nintendo Life gave the game 5 stars out of 10, praising the art style, soundtrack, and potential, but criticized the lack of creativity, polish, updates, and technical performance in comparison to its contemporaries.
