Marcel the Shell with Shoes On is a 2021 American live-action/animated [[List of coming-of-age stories |coming-of-age]] mockumentary comedy film directed by Dean Fleischer-Camp from a screenplay he co-wrote with Jenny Slate and Nick Paley, based on a story the three of them created with Elisabeth Holm. It is based on the short films of the same name created and uploaded to YouTube by Fleischer-Camp in 2010. Slate reprises her voice role as Marcel, an anthropomorphic shell living with his grandmother Connie. Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Isabella Rossellini also star.

The film premiered at the Telluride Film Festival on September 3, 2021, and is set to be theatrically released in the United States on June 24, 2022, by A24. The film has received positive reviews from critics.

Marcel, a one-inch-tall seashell, searches for his family with the help of a documentary filmmaker.

In November 2021, A24 acquired the distribution rights.[4] The film is set to be released in the United States on June 24, 2022.[5]

Reception

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 100% of nine critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 8.2/10.[6] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 80 out of 100 based on six critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[7]
