Asteroid (2309) Mr. Spock was discovered on August 16, 1971 at El Leoncito by astronomer James B. Gibson. It has a diameter of at least 21 kilometers.[1][2]

The astronomer who discovered this asteroid named it after his cat, the cat being named after the fictional character Spock from the TV show Star Trek. (2309) Mr. Spock is the only asteroid named after a pet, as the International Astronomical Union usually frowns upon the practice.[3]
