The Roundup (Korean: 범죄도시2; lit. Crime City 2) is a 2022 South Korean crime action film directed by Lee Sang-yong, starring Ma Dong-seok, Son Seok-koo, and Choi Gwi-hwa.[3] A sequel of 2017 film The Outlaws, the film was released theatrically on May 18, 2022 in IMAX format.[4][5]

On accounting its box office performance, the film opened at number 1 at the South Korean box office and mobilized 467,525 admissions, which was the best opening for a Korean film in the previous 882 days.[6] Currently it is the top-grossing Korean film of 2022 in South Korea, with gross of US$21.04 million and 2.56 million admissions, as per Korean film council.[1]

Premise

The Roundup begins 4 years after the sweeping operation in Garibong-dong, Detective Ma Seok-do along with Captain Jeon Il-man and his team head to Vietnam to extradite a suspect, but soon after his arrival, he discovers additional murder cases and learns about Kang Hae-sang, a vicious killer who has been committing crimes against tourists for several years for money. In Vietnam, the duo fails to catch Kang Hae-sang, who kills the only son of a Korean business tycoon. They return to Korea in pursuit of the killer after he smuggles himself into the country to blackmail the business tycoon. Despite Ma's hot pursuit back in Korea, Kang Hae-sang wriggles out of the police's grasp, continuing his kidnapping and murder spree against Koreans. How Detective Ma and his team prove Kang's crimes and bringing him to justice forms the rest of the plot.

Production

The film was scheduled to be filmed in Vietnam in March 2020, but due to COVID-19 pandemic, filming schedule in Vietnam was postponed and the domestic part was filmed first. Later, it was decided to complete the post-production in Korea by mobilizing local filming, sets, and CG. Filming concluded in June 2021.[10]

Release

The Roundup was pre-sold to 132 countries around the world ahead of its release in South Korea. North America, Taiwan, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and the Philippines are preparing for the simultaneous release with Korea.[11] It was released on 2,497 screens on May 18, 2022 in South Korea.[2]

Reception

The Roundup opened with a record 467,525 addmissions, which is the highest opening for a film released in South Korea in last 882 days since Ashfall. It is also the best opening for a Korean film in 2022 and post-pandemic era.[12] The film crossed 1 million cumulative admissions in 2 days of release, by recording 1,016,695 cumulative viewers.[13] It surpassed 1.5 million viewers on 3rd day of its release,[14] and 2 million on 4th day, thereby becoming the fastest film to achieve the record since 2020 film Deliver Us from Evil, which achieved the feat in first weekend.[15]

As of May 21, 2022 it is at 1st place among all the Korean films released in the year 2022, with gross of US$21,041,244 and 2,562,571 admissions.[1]
