Munchlax is the one of the only known Pokémon and things in the fourth-generation series (the other being Rukario). It behaves quite opposite of its evolution, Snorlax, as it is very hyper-active. However, like Snorlax, it is almost always hungry.
Information
Little is really known about Munchlax, but it is known to scrounge for food, even in trash cans. It evolves to Snorlax. Munchlax is a baby level Pokémon such as Cleffa, Pichu, etc.
Anime/manga appearance
Munchlax appears in the seventh Pokémon movie, Destiny Deoxys. It has reportedly been seen in a Pokémon Manga magazine rumaging in trash cans. Ash first finds him with Misty in a city called, "Japelony Town". He appears in different episode and hard to catch.
Name origin
English Name
The name Munchlax originates from the words munch and lax (the 'lax' originating from Snorlax, the evolved form of Munchlax).
Japanese Name
Its name is thought to be a combination of the final sylable of Snorlax (Kabigon) and a "be" (pronounced "bay") possibly standing for baby (Kabigon baby). This caused on May 26 for its name to be though to be Laxbe even though the English name had not yet been released.
Also, Gombei is a very old-fashioned Japanese given name for a man. A person whose name is not known (a John Doe) is Na-nashi no Gombei in Japanese. Many names ending in "be" (or "bei") were common in the Edo period and afterward. Examples include Jimbei, Kambei, and (without the rendaku) Jihei, and Mohei.
