Elie Mystal Jr. (born May 10, 1978) is a far-left attorney, writer and commentator.[1] He is the justice correspondent at The Nation, where he writes about the courts, the criminal justice system and politics.[2]
Biography
Mystal is the son of late Elie Mystal Sr., Suffolk Legislature's first elected African-American.[3] He is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.[citation needed]
He is the author of Allow Me to Retort: A Black Guy's Guide to the Constitution, which is intended to be an "easily digestible argument about what rights we have, what rights Republicans are trying to take away, and how to stop them."[4][third-party source needed] Mystal's book, which was published by The New Press in March 2022, became a New York Times best-seller that same month.[5]
Views
Mystal has described himself as a liberal.[1] He has been outspoken on a variety of issues including civil rights, abortion, and the Constitution.[6][third-party source needed]
He has said the United States Constitution is "actually trash", pointing to the Fugitive Slave Clause and the Three-Fifths Compromise.[1][7]
