W. H. Rogers was a state legislator in Georgia. He represented McIntosh County, Georgia and first took office in 1902.[1] He served in the 99th Georgia General Assemby.[2] He was the only African American serving in the Georgia legislature. His racist opponents vowed to redeem McIntosh County.[3] He resigned in 1907[4] when a bill to disenfranchise African Americans passed in Georgia’s legislature.[5] It was signed in 1907 by Georgia governor Hoke Smith.[5]
He received per diem and mileage pay.[6] Rogers was the last African American to serve in Georgia’s legislature[7] until 1963 when Leroy Johnson was elected to the Georgia Senate.[8]
