Om Prakash Chautala

Om Prakash Chautala (Hindi: ओम प्रकाश चौटाला) (born January 1, 1935) is an Indian politician from the state of Haryana. He is the leader of the INLD (Indian National Lok Dal), a Harayana based political party in India. He is also a former Chief Minister of the state. In the 2005 Haryana state assembly elections, INLD lost its majority, winning just 9 out of the 90 seats compared to the Congress party's 67 seats. Chautala resigned and Bhupinder Singh Hooda became the Chief Minister of Haryana.

Chautala is the eldest son of Chaudhari Devi Lal, a former deputy prime minister of India.

Controversies: In his youth, he was caught with smuggled watches and his father disowned him to save his political career. Later they reconciled their differences. His rule in Haryana has seen significant increase in corruption and violence. He formed a youth outfit-Green Brigade involved in looting and harassment. He has been involved in extortion rackets. During his rule, fed up with harassment, many prominent industrialists moved their factories to other states. Extortion and harassment was one of the main reasons he lost support of even Jats and lost elections. It is estimated that he made appx. Rs. 5000 crore (Appx $USD 22 billion) through extortion during his rule. He would come to city, sit in PWD rest house, call rich people and ask them to part with half of their wealth or face the consequences. Even rich Jats were not spared. People who would go to meet him in Chandigarh, he would take away their cars too. Other scams include accepting bribes for recruiting government school teachers and police constables. He also recruited appx 7000 police constables from outside the state and from his constituency. CBI is conducting enquiry into his assets. He has been hiding in US for a while. - To immortalize his family he has spent crores of public money in creating statues of his father in almost every city in Haryana and renamed public institutions after his father's name. + - His son Ajay Chautala is involved in land grab mafia.
