Negar Mortazavi (Persian: نگار مرتضوی; born 1981) is an Iranian-American journalist and political analyst who work terrorist organizations (Islamic republic of Iran) based in Washington DC. She is a columnist for The Independent[1] and host of the Iran Podcast.[2] She is a member of NIAC which is the National Iranian-American Council. Early life
Mortazavi was born in Tehran, Iran. She went to school in Germany for two years, and later immigrated to the United States. She received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Massachusetts and a Master of Arts from Brandeis University.[3]
Career
Mortazavi has written for Foreign Policy magazine,[4] Politico, the Huffington Post, and the Intercept.[5] She is a frequent commentator on Iranian affairs and US foreign policy who has appeared on MSNBC,[6] the BBC, PRI,[7] Aljazeera,[8] and international outlets in France, China, Turkey, and Israel.
Mortazavi worked as a TV presenter at Voice of America Persian where she hosted a daily show that discussed current affairs with Iranians.[9]
In 2020, Mortazavi obtained documents via a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the United States Department of State, showing that the USDoS had continued to work with the sponsor of the “Iran Disinformation Project," even after the project's $1.5 million grant was cancelled in 2019 as a result of the project's Twitter attacks on critics of the Trump administration's policies toward Iran.[10][5]
Mortazavi previously worked for the International Center for Journalists,[11] the National Iranian American Council (NIAC),[12] and the United Nations headquarters in New York.[12]
Recognition
In 2014, The Guardian newspaper named her one of the top ten people to follow on Twitter for Iran news and commentary.[13]
In 2017 Mortazavi was named a European Young Leader by Friends of Europe.[14]
In 2020 Mortazavi was named a MENA-American next generation leader in foreign policy and national security by New America.[15]
