Deborah Benzil, MD is a American neurosurgeon and pioneer in the field of brain and spine tumors, stereotactic radiosurgery, socioeconomic education. She was awarded the Anthony Greto Fellowship from the Association of Brain Tumor Research.[1] She is a the Vice Chair and professor of neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, USA.[2]
She has previously served as the Vice President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, one of the largest neurosurgical societies in the United States, past chair of the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies,[3] and the founder of Women in Neurosurgery.[4]
Early Life and Education
Dr. Benzil received her undergraduate degree (honors, Phi Beta Kappa) from Brown University in 1981. She attended medical school at the University of Maryland and graduated in 1985. From 1985-87, Dr. Benzil completed a two year Fellowship in Surgical Neurology NIH where she was doing molecular biology research on malignant brain tumors. Dr. Benzil completed her Neurosurgical Residency through Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital from 1988-1994.
