The Aracruz school shootings took place in November 25th, 2022, when a young man invaded two schools and shot multiple people in Aracruz, Espírito Santo. Three died and at least 11 were injured.[1]

Attack

The attack began around 9:30am.[2] The perpetrator used camouflaged clothing and a hoodie. He destroyed a lock and invaded the Primo Bitti school, realizing shots that hit 11 people — two were teachers, that died in the school[1]. After which, he went by car until the Educational Center Praia de Coqueiral,[1] entering at 9:49am by the gates, which weren't locked,[2] and continue to shoot another six victims, one of which, a 6th grade student, died in the school.[1] The perpetrator escaped the school one minute later, at 9:50am,[2] by car. He went missing until the start of the afternoon, when the Military Police released a statement saying he was in jail.[3]

Repercussion

After the attacks, the Aracruz prefecture announced the suspensions of classes on municipal schools.[4]

The mayor, Dr. Coutinho, said this was "the largest tragedy this city has ever seen".[5] Renato Casagrande, governor of the state, said he would pay attention to the case with 'much regret and sadness'[6]. President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva posted on Twitter: "My solidarity to the families of the victims in this absurd tragedy".[7]
