Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to our latest newsletter, a quarterly digest of Guild activities since October. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below.

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz focused on July and August 2022 request months; and articles tagged for c/e in December 2021 and January 2022. Seventeen of those who signed up claimed at least one copy-edit, and between them copy-edited forty-six articles. Barnstars awarded are here.

Drive: In the November Backlog Elimination Drive, thirty editors signed up, twenty-two of whom claimed at least one copy-edit. Both target months—December 2021 and January 2022—were cleared, and February was added to the target months. Sixteen requests were copy-edited and 239 articles were removed from the backlog. Barnstars awarded are here.

Blitz: Our seven-day-long December 2022 Copy Editing Blitz begins on 17 December at 00:01 (UTC)*. It will focus on articles tagged for copy-edit in February 2022, and pending requests from September and October. Barnstars awarded will be available here.

Progress report: As of 22:40, 8 December 2022, GOCE copyeditors have processed 357 requests since 1 January, there were seventy-four requests outstanding and the backlog stands at 1,791 articles. We always need skilled copy-editors; please help out if you can.

Election news: Nomination of candidates for the GOCE's Election of Coordinators for the first half of 2023 is open and continues until 23:59 on 15 December. Voting begins at 00:01 on 16 December and closes at 23:59 on 31 December. All editors in good standing (not under ArbCom or community sanctions) are eligible and self-nominations are welcomed. Coordinators serve a six-month term that ends at 23:59 on June 30. If you've thought about helping out at the Guild, please nominate yourself or any editor you consider suitable—with their permission, of course!. It's your Guild and it doesn't coordinate itself.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers and best seasonal wishes from your GOCE coordinators, Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Tenryuu, and Zippybonzo.

Revert nonpartisan elections

All elections in California are only nonpartisan in 2010 every thing 2010 and back is not nonpartisan so please remove the block it was not disputative editing 74.62.14.55 (talk) 03:49, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you change it back to Democratic when it deliberately states on the page Municipal elections in California are officially non-partisan.? Sarrail (talk) 03:58, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
They do this with multiple IPs, apparently they don't like the grey box under it even when they do say "nonpartisan." reppoptalk
Reppop, I'm guessing the editor is back as another IP address. Sarrail (talk) 02:46, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's them. IIRC someone blocked them for a week on the 2603:8001:2902:64F4 address, I guess it expired now. reppoptalk 02:49, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite. They've been blocked for 3 years 'cause of a school block. Sarrail (talk) 02:50, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sorry I was talking about that 2603:8001:2902:64F4 one, I know the 74.62.14.55 one is blocked for 3 years. reppoptalk 02:51, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Um, they haven't been blocked. Is it a /64 range? Sarrail (talk) 02:54, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think so? I just really remember going to one of the IP addresses and it had that. reppoptalk 02:56, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. Guess I missed the /64 range. Sarrail (talk) 02:58, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And they're right back at it on editing without consensus. reppoptalk 04:38, 12 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Birthday!

Guild of Copy Editors December 2022 Newsletter error

The GOCE December 2022 newsletter, as sent on 9 December, contains an erroneous start date for our December Blitz. The Blitz will start on 11 December rather than on 17 December, as stated in the newsletter. I'm sorry for the mistake and for disrupting your talk page; thanks for your understanding. Sent by Baffle gab1978 via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:30, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment on my talk page

Hi, I'm guessing that you may have left a [message on my talk page] in error. If it was intended for another user, this is a heads-up. If it was intended for me, I'll need more details in order to understand your meaning. Cheers.-- Quisqualis (talk) 22:45, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Another user seemed to create your userpage for you about a question and I questioned whether it was intended for your userpage or your talk page. So I brought it to your talk page to let you know about the creation of your userpage by another user, and if it was created by accident, I figured to place the "U1" CSD tag, but I guess it was already done so per the page deletion log. Sarrail (talk) 22:52, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Not the first time... :-( Quisqualis (talk) 22:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you want it to be protected from being repeatedly recreated, I might suggest you A blue lock. Sarrail (talk) 23:04, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm impressed by those editors who create a redirect tp their talk page; it's on my to-do list! Quisqualis (talk) 23:37, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
7 occurrences–yikes. Maybe it'll do the trick. What's on your to-do list anyway? AfDs? PRODs? Anti-Vandalism? Is it as long as Santa Claus's long list of requested gifts and requirements? Sarrail (talk) 23:48, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's further down that long list than my Xmas plans.:) Quisqualis (talk) 23:54, 9 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Response to greetings

Hello, Sarrail. I notice that you've left two greetings messages on Talk pages of recent IP's of mine. I appreciate your welcoming efforts, but please be aware . . .

I've been editing on Wikipedia for approaching 20 years. I've deliberately chosen not to open an Account (so far). This is both on principle and for personal reasons –

I believe that all posts and edits should stand or fall on their own merits, rather than on their editor's reputation.
I'm comfortable with the degree of activity I currently devote to the project; were I to open an account I would, because of my own obsessive personality, feel obligated to spend even more effort and time, more than I ought, to both up-front editing and back-room activities.

Now that I've reached retirement age and and am free of various former professional and personal responsibilities, I may in the future change my position, but for the moment it stands.

In former years I edited from workplaces and libraries as well as from home, though latterly only the last. Some years ago my former home ISP, which used static IPs, was taken over by my current one which provides dynamic ones. In order to preserve continuity within dialogues (actual and potential), I end all my posts and edit summaries with a Prince-flavoured nod to my last static IP – you could check it to (partly) confirm my longevity here, and you can use my sign-off to avoid the effort of greeting future new IPs of mine.

Regards
