On another note : a french user wonders why he can't put "thé" in the search box ?

It may be confusing it with 'the' which is filtered out as unsearchable by the database... (cursed english assumptions!) --bv

LOL. No, on Opera (now that test is working again) it looks fine (no perfedt). I really can't work with Opera 6, I tried, but it is awfully slow with system 9, and I really can't upgrade my computer to x. This display was on IE. Well, I just mention it (I try to avoid using IE, this is an ethical position) in case someone else mentions it. All the display skins are perfect on Opera and Mozilla. There are some pb with the bar position under Netscape with nostalgia. It has ever been. I never log in under Netscape. But I had no pb with IE before. I heard of a new browser I will try. We have a french contributor putting a lot of weird caracteres in articles, which I break each time I edit these articles. Like 212 name. If he goes on insisting in putting breakable caracteres everywhere, he will have to correct a lot behind me.
Sometimes, I feel very unlovable :-( and an experiment field as well
Hehe... I'll try ie/mac and see if i can find a workaround... but it's also buggy, avoid it like the plague. :) --bv

Hello Brion, sorry to bother you (again) with your busy schedule is it possible u could create a temp wiki with this url: http://quote.wikipedia.org, its an idea sister project (About 3 sugestions for name at the moment) I had and wrote in meta, which no one has commented on. I tempoary used wo.wikipedia.com, but you do nto have to convert it over I can just copy and paste. Its only about 5 pages. -fonzy

I've been up forever and am going to bed now before I start wiping the hard drive by mistake. :) I'll set up that and temp wikis at textbook.wikipedia.org, sourceberg.wikipedia.org, and wikimedia.org, and upgrade wiktionary.org, tomorrow hopefully. --bv

And, hum, well, one day, the search should be able to differenciate languages somehow. Say to take into account accentuation. The is not thé :-)

Wow! Brion, great job on the Hebrew wikipedia. I can actually start writing articles there! (though it's still quite buggy) excellent, I would be glad to help translating the software (if I find the time).

I will start with what appears to work fine:

  • Writing in hebrew in the edit-box (right to left) seems to work, making wiki links does too. even wikilinks [[like this|yadda]] seem to work, I have created a sandbox to test more markup features.

Some problems (of course, there are lots of them.. ;):

  • urls and Interlanguage links can become pretty unnatural because of the left-to-right thing. (not a bug, really)
    • not sure there's much we can do about this, alas
  • Alternate text for links (and images??) doesn't display. "mouseover" Wiki urls look cryptic on my browser like http://he.wikipedia.org/wiki/XXXXX:XXXXXXXXXXX
    • title text popup display is going to be a browser-dependent thing... for instance, in Mozilla 1.3.1 on Unix I do see the Hebrew text in the popups. Other browsers may vary. I'm always very suspicious of IE on Windows for these kinds of things; it tends to use a local-encoding font for certain UI elements that can screw up on things it can display in regular page text. As far as the URLs, yeah they're pretty cryptic. Not much we can do about that, unfortunately, short of titling all articles in ascii. :( Again, some browsers will show them prettier than others; Mozilla at least sometimes will show the decoded version in the status bar when hovering over links, but in the URL bar it's always the %xx%xx%xx stuff... Wait a couple years and support should be more widespread I hope. :)
  • on "Page History" or "Recent Changes" hebrew summaries appear in the left, but english ones in the right, the (cur) (last) thing get mangled with the summary.
    • urrrrrrrrgh :) There's probably some explicit markup hints we can do to clear some of this stuff up, but until the interface is localized it's hard to see which bits are going to remain problematic.
  • I have absolutely no idea how to put html markup with hebrew text. Probably a good reason to abandon it completely (stuff like tables etc.)

  • In Explorer/Mozilla some weird things sometimes happen with the layout of the quickbar, I will investigate it a bit more.

I just gave a quick test of the system, so probably there are thousands of bugs I didn't notice, anyway, great job. I would like to ask if the encoding is final (UTF-8?), I mean, can I start writing articles? -- Rotem Dan 07:49 9 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Yes, it will be UTF-8 forever, and you can start writing articles, so long as it's not too too buggy. :) (You might want to save copies of your work locally to be on the safe side...) --Brion 08:04 9 Jul 2003 (UTC)
Woohoo! I'm already set up with the username (ID #2! I wanted #1 !!). I worked on the "Welcome, newcomers" thing and even started writing about "NPOV". Though translating some stuff makes it sound rather weird in hebrew as there are no direct equivalent words for "bias", "neutral", "Point of view" in hebrew so I have to be creative.. ;-)
Also I think translating the software to hebrew, if possible, is something I can do in a matter of, say, a couple of days or a week maximum. The only thing that bothers me is how to translate the word "Wikipedia" to hebrew without making it sound too unnatural to hebrew speakers (Say, like the equivalent of "Encyclopedia Libre" in hebrew).
I think the whole thing can be a real hit if it is easy enough to participate. See, currently, hebrew reference is rather dull. There are some non-transtlated hebrew encyclopedias that really suck and abriged paper translations of "Encyclopedia Britannica" to hebrew that are rather comprehensive (would I say "encumbered by patents"? ;) but no online hebrew encyclopedia! (so I guess even a hebopedia with 100 articles would probably stand as one of the most comprehensive hebrew general reference resources on the Internet! as bizzar as it seems!).
