Fernando Bale (born December 3, 2013) is a retired Hall of Fame Champion Australian Greyhound, which many racing experts in Australia consider to be the greatest all-time racing greyhound in the history of Australian racing.[1] He won 35 races in 44 career starts, and won 11 Group (Greyhound Group Racing in Australia) stakes races in his career, 8 of which were Group 1 stakes races, and earned a world-record $1.3m in prize money.[2]
Appearance
Fernando Bale was mostly white in color with most of his body and legs white, but he also had a brindle rump and face (except a white stripe in the middle of his face). His official colour was white and dark brindle.[3]
Career
His first victory was the 525-m maiden special weight at The Meadows. After two further wins, he won his first of eight Group 1 stakes races in the Group 1 National Derby at Wentworth Park. After the Ballarat Derby at Ballarat Greyhounds, Fernando Bale won the G1 Golden Easter Egg back at Wentworth Park. His remarkable career continued with Group 1 stakes wins in G1 Maturity at The Meadows Greyhounds, the G1 Harrison-Dawson at Sandown Greyhounds, G1 Peter Mosman at Wentworth Park, and the G1 National Sprint at Angle Park Greyhounds, as well as Group stakes wins in the Group 2 Traralgon Cup at Traralgon, the G2 Bendigo Cup at Bendigo Greyhounds, and the G3 Bill Collins Memorial. His last two Group 1 wins were in the G1 Adelaide Cup at Angle Park and the G1 Top Gun at The Meadows.[4]
He raced in the G1 Melbourne Cup Final, but placed second by a small margin to champion Dyna Double One, a greyhound whom Fernando Bale had defeated in many other G1 stakes races. He then won the G2 Ballarat final and a free-for-all before injury took him to stud.[5] In 44 career races, he won 35 races, and placed in 5 races. He has been an outstanding sire, as of June 2022 he had sired 165 Group and Listed stakes winners, and his progeny have won at Group 1 level over sprint, middle and staying distances, including Tornado Tears, Sennachie, My Redeemer, Poke The Bear, Dyna Patty, West On Augie, Hasten Slowly, Rippin’ Sam, Hecton Bale, Out Of Range, Deliver, Blue Moon Rising, Veloce Nero, Trouper Monelli, Velocity Liberty and Rockstar Patriot.[2]
